Today I can present you the finished Promethium Relay Pipes. I got a lot of interesting feedback when I posted a WIP picture of them, hopefully I made the best out of it. Check out more pictures after the jump.
Painting these pipes was very interesting, because it was my first serious attempt at building and painting terrain (believe it or not). When I paint models, I painstakingly pick out every detail, but for these I chose a different approach. I took a lot of inspiration from the terrain you see in the background of the photography you see in GW publincations, as well as ThirdEyeNuke's painting style. For me, it was a welcome change of pace.
The pipes were primed black and then hit with a dark red zenithal highlight with my airbrush. Then I did some heavy drybrushing to highlight the details, and added sponge weathering. All in all, they didn't really take very much time to paint, just a couple of hours in total.
While you're reading this, I already started painting the Manufactorum pieces I featured in my recent post, and I'll take pictures of every step to explain the paint scheme in more detail in a dedicated tutorial post. So stay tuned for that.
All in all, I'm quite happy with the result, the dark muted red doesn't steal the show from my models but fits the Mechanicus aesthetics very well. I'm not completely happy with the weathering though, I think it's a bit too random. In hindsight, I should have sticked to the edges.
How do you like the pipes and the paint scheme? Would you like to see a tutorial for this paint job?
